The Eucalyptus Forest (Cessenon sur Orb)

D14 - 34460 Cessenon sur Orb

The eucalyptus forest lies to the north west of the village of Cessenon on the D14 road. In 1958, there was an experiment to plant a dozen species of eucalyptus across an area of 14 ha, replacing the maquis shrubland. In 1984, however, all the eucalyptus trees died of frost. The remains subsequently formed a forest copse alongside 25 ha of maritime pine trees.

There is a yellow signposted footpath allowing you to explore the forest.

The Coumiac Marble Quarry (Cessenon)

Route de Causses et Veyran - 3460 Cessenon

The Coumiac marble quarry is a small geological wonder that lies just a few kilometres to the north of Cessenon. Marble from Coumiac, dubbed marbre griotte (Morello cherry marble), has been used since the 6th century for decorations and for covering gravestones. In 1890, Nicolas Gauthier, a stonemason from Jura, opened the quarry, which would remain in use until 1965. Its top-quality marble was used to decorate prestigious buildings such as the White House in Washington and the Maison de la France in Rio de Janeiro.

The Blockfield of Réals (Cessenon sur Orb)

Réals - 34460 Cessenon sur Orb

At a place known as Réals, home to a blockfield where dolomitic rocks form steep gorges, the Orb gushes into a corridor of impressive rapids. A little further one stands the bridge of Réals, a fine example of 19th-century craftsmanship comprising 5 13-metre vaults on the left bank of the river and 1 13-metre vault on the right bank, joined together by a 50-metre-long metal arch. The unspoilt backdrop of the location makes it an ideal spot for fishing and relaxing at the picnic area just 2 km from Cessenon.

The rocky outcrops of Cazedarnes are made up of a layer of limestone deposited in a lake 65 million years ago, and subsequently folded by the emergence of the Pyrenees. Erosion eventually hollowed out valleys between the ridges, throwing them into sharp relief.
